Today, April 19, Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon met with the UN Secretary General’s Assistant for Sustainable Energy Luis Gomez-Echeverri.

According to Tajik President’s press service, the sides met to discuss current condition and prospects of Tajik-UN multilateral cooperation and, firstly, in water and energy and sustainable development sectors.

President Rahmon called UN Secretary-General’s initiative on “Sustainable energy for all” to be the logical continuation of global community’s efforts in the given direction and expressed satisfaction over inclusion of Tajikistan into the list of this program’s pilot countries.

The sides noted once again that the “Sustainable energy for all” initiative has set three goals to be attained by 2030: ensuring universal access to modern energy services; doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. Thus, 1.3bln people must be provided with access to energy and 2.7bln people with access to fuel by the end of this period.

UN Secretary-General’s Assistant highly evaluated Tajikistan’s global initiatives in water and energy sector and expressed confidence that the republic will remain active at the global scene.

The sides also noted that as a pilot country for implementation of the “Sustainable energy for all” initiative, Tajikistan will get support for implementation of energy programs since the population of the republic has no access to sustainable energy.

The sides have highly evaluated the prospect of development of Tajikistan’s hydroenergy sector and noted that such energy refers to one of renewable energy sources and is ecologically clean and safe.
