DUSHANBE, December 1, Asia-Plus -- Tajikistan has been admitted to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Committee for Youth’s Affairs, Sports and tourism said.
The 17th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, which was held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, ratified the inclusion of new member members, underscoring the ever increasing support of the Organization’s leadership in tourism.
Tajikistan along with Brunei and Montenegro joined the Organization as new Member States, next to the ratification of 65 new Affiliate Members over the past two years.
150 member states of the UNWTO voted for admission of Tajikistan to the Organization.
Around 700 Participants from 120 countries, 56 Affiliate Members and 20 international organizations, and close to 200 registered members of the press, gathered on November 22-29 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on the occasion of the 17th session of the UNWTO General Assembly.
We will recall that Tajik delegation led by Maliksho Nematov, chairman of the Committee for Youth’s Affairs, Sports and Tourism, attended the 17th session of the UNWTO in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. .
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO/OMT) is a specialized agency of the United Nations and the leading international organization in the field of tourism. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and a practical source of tourism know-how.
UNWTO plays a central and decisive role in promoting development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of developing counties. .
The UNWTO membership includes 157 countries and territories and more than 300 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities. Direct actions that strengthen and support the efforts of National Tourism Administrations are carried out by UNWTO''s regional representatives (Africa, the Americas, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe, the Middle east and South Asia) based at the Headquarters in Madrid. UNWTO is committed to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) geared toward reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development.
