DUSHANBE, October 30, 2013, Asia-Plus -- Through the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation Program (AFCP), the U.S. Embassy will award two grants for the renovation of historical museums in the cities of Hisor and Konibodom, the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe said.

The U.S. Embassy’s AFCP program is devoted to preserving the unique cultural heritage of host countries.

The State Republic Organization “Hisor Historical-Cultural Reserve” will implement the reconstruction of the museum in Hisor, formerly known as Madrasai Kuhna.  In September of 2015, the Government of Tajikistan will celebrate the 3,000th anniversary of Hisor.  The AFCP grant totaling $72,300 will be used to renovate the walls and the roof of the Madrasa, as well as upgrade its various rooms with modern equipment, and design promotional materials for the upcoming celebration.

The Public Organization “Taraqqiyot”, in close cooperation with local authorities, will implement the renovation of the historical Madrasa Mirrajab Dodkho in Konibodom.  The Madrasa, which is now a museum overseen by the Ministry of Culture, is located in the north-eastern part of Konibodom city in an area known as Jui Labijar.  It was constructed in the second half of 17th century (1659-1669 AD) with the help of local craftsmen.  The total area of the Madrasa is 1693 square meters and consists of two aiwans (halls), a minaret, and twenty-six hujras (rooms).  The AFCP grant, in the amount of $79,600, will be used to renovate the rooms, reconstruct the roof, and install modern displays.

Since 2001, the AFCP has funded 15 projects in Tajikistan, providing over $500,000 to preserve unique Tajik cultural heritage.  Previously funded projects include the preservation and protection of the 9th Century Khoja Mashhad Madrasa and Mausoleum in Shahritous, the conservation of murals from the Lower Palace of Ancient Panjakent, and the restoration and protection of a collection from the State Museum of Antiquities.

Since 1992, the American people have provided over $1 billion in programs and humanitarian aid that support Tajikistan’s democratic institutions, health care, culture, education and economic growth.
