The CIS mission of observers considers the elections to the lower (legislative) chamber of the national parliament held in Uzbekistan on Sunday to be free and open, corresponding to the universally recognized norms.

“The elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oly Mazhlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which were held on December 27, 2009, were held in accordance with the Constitution of the republic, electoral legislation which is in force in the country and universally recognized norms of holding democratic elections,” says a statement of the mission issued here on Monday.

The document stresses that the held elections are recognized to “be free and open.”

“The elections demonstrated the level of political maturity of civil society, ensured free will of electors, strengthened the foundations of state sovereignty and democratic bases of the Republic of Uzbekistan,” the CIS mission of observers notes.
