DUSHANBE, October 3, Asia-Plus - Germany today marks a Day Unity. Germany was officially reunified on October 3, 1990, when the six reestablished federal states (Bundeslandet) of East Germany joined the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany).
The German Embassy in Dushanbe organizes reception on this occasion today. 350 guests have been invited to attend the holiday reception.
Press release issued by the German Embassy quoted German Ambassador to Tajikistan Rainer Muller as saying, “Germany as reliable partner will make its contribution to development of Tajikistan in future as well.”
“During its holding the European Union Council Chairmanship in 2007 Germany will attach a special significance to relations of the European Union with Central Asia’s states,” says the press release, “Germany wants to intensify its relationships with these countries. In this connection, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will have a tour of the Central Asian countries from October 30 to November 3.”
German foreign minister is expected to visit Tajikistan on November 1 as part of his tour of Central Asia, accoridng to the source.
The two post-war German states became one on October 3, 1990. The six reestablished federal states of East Germany– Branderburg, Berlin (formed by uniting the two halves of the formerly divided city), Mecklenburg-West Pemirania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia formally joined the Federal Republic of Germany, choosing one of two options implemented in the West German constitution (Grundgesetz). This event, seen with the benefit of hindsight, was as much the starting point as the culmination of the process of unification.
