DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus -- Tajik law enforcement officials reported yesterday that they have arrested two members of the organized drug-trafficking grouping engaged in transporting drugs from Afghan border to the Tajik capital. 

According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI), the two were detained in a special operation carried out by officers from the law enforcement agencies in Dushanbe on January 22.  A source at a MoI said that more than 30 kilograms of raw opium were confiscated from them.  “Police is taking measures to detained other members of this grouping,” the source said, refraining from giving further details.  

            Last year, Tajik law enforcement agencies seized some 4,790 kilograms of drugs, which is 3.8 percent more than in 2005. 

Officers from the MoI alone intercepted more than 2,440 kilograms of drugs.  Tajikistan’s counternarcotics agency (Drug Control Agency) seized some 1,400 kilograms of drugs, Tajik border troops 821 kilograms, former ministry of security (MoS) some 10 kilograms and customs service 28 kilograms.
