DUSHANBE, June 22, Asia-Plus - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, expressed his deep condolences today to the families of two Norwegian military officers who died after being hit by a vehicle in Tajikistan.
The two officers were seconded by Norway to work on a project to store safely and destroy surplus small arms and light weapons. They were struck by a vehicle as they were walking on a pedestrian crossing near their apartment late on Thursday evening. One of the officers died soon after in hospital. The second officer underwent surgery but later died.
The names of the officers were being withheld at the request of the Norwegian authorities.
"This is a shocking and sad loss. I extend my most sincere condolences to the families of the two officers and to the people of Norway,” the Chairman-in-Office said.
The Chairman-in-Office expressed his support and admiration for the men’s work in Tajikistan.
"The program to secure and destroy surplus arms is vital for the security of Tajikistan and is significant for people well beyond that country’s borders as we seek to limit the spread of weapons," he said. "I deeply appreciate the work and dedication of all those involved in this project. This is the OSCE at its best and they can be proud of their role."
