DUSHANBE, October 9, Asia-Plus – The concept of the development of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) signed in Dushanbe must clear all doubts about the organization’s future, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin told reporters on Monday, commenting on the CIS summit held at weekend.
“The document gives the answer to the question whether or not the Commonwealth will continue to exist. If a responsible attitude is shown and there is political will to implement the concept, CIS countries will be able to use many advantages because of a broad market in this expanse, existing traditional relations and similarity of problems,” Voronin said.
Voronin holds that Moldova’s participation in the implementation of the CIS development concept, mainly as regards the economy, corresponds to the course of European integration proclaimed in Chisinau. “Moldova will participate in the work of the Commonwealth while honoring unconditionally all its international obligations,” he said.
The Moldovan president pointed to a high level of preparation and holding of the CIS summit, as well as effectiveness of the debate in the summit’s framework. He holds that the problem of economic cooperation was central to the debate.
Voronin said the economic aspect had likewise been central to his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said he had discussed prospects for the Dniester settlement with Putin.
