DUSHANBE, February 25, Asia-Plus – According to the preliminary data, 150 head of yaks and 380 head of sheep and goats have perished in Gorno Badakhshan this month because of extreme winter weather and heavy snowfalls.
Speaking in an interview with Pamir Media, Adolat Haidarova, the deputy head of the GBAO agriculture directorate, said that the actual volume of damage caused to the region’s agrarian sector by cold weather and heavy snowfalls has not yet been assessed.
“Faming units in the region now need 60 tons of mixed fodder, and therefore, we have applied to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection for help,” Ms. Haidarova said, noting that 445 head of sheep and goats and more than 80 head of cattle perished in Gorno Badakhshan in 2007.
