DUSHANBE, September 17, 2008, Asia-Plus  -- Tajikistan tops Central Asia’s states and stands in the second place among the CIS in terms of infant mortality, Washington Profile reports, referring to UNICEF’s flagship publication, the State of World’s Children 2008.  

The State of the World''s Children 2008 assesses the state of child survival and primary health care for mothers, newborns and children.  The report covers more than 190 countries of the world.  

The report ranks the post-Soviet countries as following: Tajikistan (ranked 57th, the under-five mortality rate – 68 per 1000 live births); Turkmenistan (ranked 67th, 51 per 1,000 live births); Uzbekistan (ranked 69th, 43 per 1,000 live births); Kyrgyzstan (ranked 71st, 41 per 1,000 live births); Kazakhstan (ranked 92nd, 29 per 1,000 live births); Azerbaijan (ranked 46th, 88 per 1,000 live births); Georgia (ranked 86th, 32 per 1,000 live births); Armenia and Ukraine (ranked 101st, 24 per 1,000 live births); Moldova (ranked 116th, 19 per 1,000 live births); Russia (ranked 125th, 18 per 1,000 live births); Belarus (ranked 135th, 13 per 1,000 live births); Latvia (ranked 148th, 9 per 1,000 live births); Lithuania (ranked 151st, 8 per 1,000 live births); and Estonia (ranked 157th, 7 per 1,000 live births).
