DUSHANBE, March 3, 2009, Asia-Plus  -- Experts from member nations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)  and national coordinators on Afghanistan met at the CSTO Secretariat in Moscow on March 2 to work out a concerted stance on issues related to providing support to Afghanistan, developing collective mechanisms for fighting drug trafficking and  shutting down channels of financing of terrorism in cooperation with other international and regional organizations such as the CIS, the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the OSCE and the European Union, according to the CSTO press service.

The meeting participants also exchanged views on the latest developments in Afghanistan.  According to the CSTO experts, the situation in Afghanistan remains tense, the volumes of Afghanistan’s drug trafficking are increasing, and the Taliban Movement is activating in the country.

Taking into account the provisions of the UN documents and other international agreements as well as documents adopted within the CSTO, the experts and national coordinators discussed possible directions of cooperation and initiatives to fight drug trafficking and shut  down channels of financing of terrorist activity, the press service said.

It is stipulated, for example, to combine efforts of member nations of the Organization to fight drug trafficking, conduct financial monitoring on shutting down channels of financing of terrorism, and train personnel for law enforcement agencies of Afghanistan.
