KULOB, July 14, 2009, Asia-Plus -- In June 2009, labor migrants remitted 9,940,374 US dollars to banks in Khatlon’s Kulob region, which is practically equal to the volumes of remittances made to the region over the first quarter of this year, Abdukarim Nematov, the head of the branch of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) in Kulob, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.
“However, one cannot speak about any stabilization of the situation,” said Nematov, “Over the first six months of this year, labor migrants have remitted 34,185,132 dollars to local banks, which is 17.5 million dollars fewer than in the same period of 2008.”
According to him, labor migrants have also remitted 325 million Russian rubles to banks in the Kulob zone over the same six-month period, which is three times more than in the same period of last year.
