KHUJAND, August 10, 2009, Asia-Plus - In July this, residents of Sughd province remitted 20.865 million U.S. dollars other countries, which is more than two times than in July 2008, when Sughd residents remitted 9.899 million U.S. dollars to other countries, Abduvohid Raupov, the head of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) in Khujand, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.
In the meantime, labor migrants’ remittances to the province are continuing to decrease.
Over the first seven months of this year, labor migrants have remitted 265.294 million U.S. dollars to local banks, while over the same period of last year, they remitted 401.69 million U.S. dollars to banks in the province, the head of NBT’s branch in Khujand said.
“In July this year, labor migrants remitted 61.626 million U.S. dollars to banks in northern Tajikistan, which is nearly 36 million dollars fewer than in July 2008,” Raupov said, noting that labor migrants remitted US$97.602 million to Sughd’s banks in July 2008.
