DUSHANBE, October 30, 2009, Asia-Plus   – Today, the EU-UNDP Central Asia Drug Action Programme (CADAP) handed over computers, office and household equipment, and sport inventory to the “SPIN Plus” organization for further use at the “Half-Way House” for drug addicts at the Prison Central Hospital located in Dushanbe, according to the Delegation of the European Commission in Tajikistan.

The total cost of the equipment is about € 16 000.

Under its "Prisons" project, CADAP helps introduce the rehabilitation and counseling program "Atlantis" in the five Central Asian countries by featuring a 12-step therapy program on the treatment and rehabilitation of drug-addicts in prisons.

The project also provides continuing support for prisoners by the creation of “Half-Way Houses” after their release from prison. “Half-Way Houses” provide assistance (temporary housing, renewals of documents, vocational training etc) for ex-prisoners to adjust to life after their release from prison.

In all Central Asian countries non-governmental organizations were contracted to provide renovation/reconstruction works and install equipment in prisons for providing social support.  In Tajikistan, this job was performed by the NGO “SPIN Plus”.

The overall objective of the EU-UNDP CADAP Programme is the gradual adoption of EU and international good practices on drug policy covering both supply and demand reduction aspects by beneficiary authorities. CADAP is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP.
