DUSHANBE, July 26, 2010, Asia-Plus -- A seminar on safety standards for management of radioactive waste has kicked off in Dushanbe today.
Organized by the Government of Tajikistan with support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the seminar that runs till July 30 has brought together specialists from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania and Uzbekistan, the source at the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan said.
The meeting participants are considering issues related to safety of radioactive waste and ionization sources. The meeting will also discuss projects and achievements of the IAEA member nations in the filed of nuclear and radioactive safety, the source added.
We will recall that more than 50 million tons of radioactive waste is reportedly stored in 10 tailing dumps in the northern Sughd province.
