KHOROG, August 31, 2010, Asia-Plus -- The GBAO AIDS Center is conducting HIV prevention activities in military units deployed in Gorno Badakhshan.
Saodatqadam Akulbekov, the head of the epidemiology department within the GBAO AIDS Center, told Asia-Plus Tuesday afternoon that they plan to conduct the HIV prevention activities among servicemen of military units deployed in the region along with other sections of the population vulnerable to HIIV/AIDS such as drug addicts and labor migrants.
“Taking into account low HIV/AIDS awareness of servicemen, we have decided to include military personnel into the group of sections of the population vulnerable to HIV/AIDS,” said Akulbekov, “With the consent of commanders of military units deployed in Gorno Badakhshan, we are conducting training on preventing HIV/AIDS and conducting the HIV express test for medical personnel of the military units.”
According to the statistical data from the GBAO AIDS Center, 156 HIV sufferers have been officially registered in Gorno Badakhshan to this day.
