DUSHANBE, January 5, 2012, Asia-Plus -- 989 new cases of HIV infection were registered in Tajikistan in 2011, bringing the total number of the officially registered HIV sufferers in the country to 3,846, the Republican AIDS Prevention Center said.
Of those new cases of HIV infection registered last year, 407 cases were reported in Dushanbe, 229 in districts subordinate to the center, 158 in Khatlon province, 142 in Sughd province and 53 in Gorno Badakhshan.
Compared to the previous year, the number of new cases of HIV infection decreased in Dushanbe and Sughd province and increased in Khatlon province and districts subordinate to the center.
It is to be noted that 1,004 new cases of HIV were registered in the country in 2010.
