KHUJAND, January 30, Asia-Plus  -- The northern Sughd province is suffering from subsoil water.

High water levels in the Syr Darya River and the reservoir powering the Qairoqqum hydroelectric power plant (HPP) have caused the rise in the subsoil water level in the area, affecting arable lands and residential buildings in the districts of Bobojonghafurov, Spitamen and Jabborrasoulov as well as the cites of Khujand and Konibodom.

Thus, in the Isfisor jamoat of the Bobojonghafurov district, subsoil waters have damaged a number of residential buildings and local school # 6.

In Khujand, subsoil waters have reportedly damaged a number of residential buildings located in the left-bank part of the city.

In Konibodom, local residents cannot plant orchards because of the rise in subsoil water levels caused by the high water levels in the Qairoqqum reservoir, the source noted.

The Qairoqqum HPP director Fayzullo Avezov says current rate of water inflow into the Qairoqqum reservoir is 1,000-1,000 cubic meter per second, which is 25-30 percent higher than in January 2011.  He noted that the hydropower plant is currently operating in full capacity, generating u to 2.8 million kWh of electricity per day.
