DUSHANBE, August 3, 2012, Asia-Plus -- Residents of Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region and nearby villages cannot receive remittances because of lack of mobile communications and Internet.
We will recall that communications lines to the city of Khorog and nearby districts were cut off in the early morning of July 24, when the government forces launched a military operation in Khorog.
Labor migrants are a critical component in the economy of Gorno Badakhshan, which is the poorest region in Tajikistan. Remittances keep many families at home above the poverty line, and help to alleviate the stress caused by a lack of domestic job opportunities.
