KULOB, April 14, 2014, Asia-Plus -- Torrential rain on April 12-13 caused a series of landslides and floods that damaged residential buildings in several villages in Khatlon’s districts of Shouroobod, Vose and Kulob.

An official source at the Shouroobod district says 13 members of one family in the village of Odinaboy were killed after their house was buried by a landslide that occurred on the night of April 12-13.

The landslide also destroyed five residential buildings in the Odinaboy village. 

A flood that occurred yesterday in the village of Chordara in the Vose district killed the six-year girl Muharram Rahmonali.   

 Heavy rains also caused floods in the villages of Panjosiyob, Garabdara and Loyluqa in the Kulob district.  A number of residential buildings were damaged by floods, the source said.  No injured was reported, according to him.

By president’s order a working group has been set up to assess the actual damage caused by the natural disaster and provide assistance to the landslide-affected people.

We will recall that floods that were caused by heavy rains in the Kulob region of Khatlon province on May 6, 2010 killed at least 20 people.  The Tebalay River breeched its banks, leaving many people unable to reach higher ground.  Dozens of buildings, roads, telephone lines, bridges and other infrastructure in Khatlon''s Shouroobod, Muminobod, and Vose districts were destroyed.

Many of the bridges in Kulob were damaged or destroyed.
