DUSHANBE, August 3, 2011, Asia-Plus -- Monitoring of food prices has shown that prices for some basic food products have risen between 10 and 100 percent at Dushanbe’s bazaars on the threshold of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Prices for carrots and cucumbers have risen from 1.50 somoni to 3.00-4.00 somoni and 2.50-3.00 somoni per kilogram respectively. Prices for potatoes and onions have risen from 1.50 to 2.00 and 2.50 somoni per kilogram respectively.
Tomato prices still remain the same, but it is to be noted that the price of one kilogram of tomatoes rose from 1.50 to 3.00-4.00 somoni in mid-July for unknown reason.
The price of one liter of vegetable oil has risen from 9.50-10.00 to 11.00-12.00 somoni and the price of one kilogram of sugar has risen from 6.50 to 7.50 somoni.
Egg prices have also risen on the threshold of Ramadan. The price of ten eggs has risen from 6.00 to 7.00 somoni.
In the meantime, the prices of wheat flour and rice still remain unchanged. The price of kilogram of rice fluctuates from 5.00 to 10.00 somoni, depending on grade and the price for a 50-kilogram sack of wheat flour fluctuates from 125.00 to 140.00 somoni.
Meat prices have also not changed. According to price list, the price of one kilogram of beef is 23.00 somoni, but butchers actually sell it at 26.00-28.00 somoni per kilogram.
