DUSHANBE, November 13, Asia-Plus -- In a statement released on November 12, the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) revealed that there is a possibility that counterfeit banknotes may appear in circulation.

Therefore, Tajik central bank calls on employees of the banking system, legal and physical entities to be prudent while dealing with cash, especially foreign currencies.

The NBT notes that not only law enforcement agencies but also employees of the banking system and each member of society should combat counterfeiters.

“Citizens of the country ought to use only the national currency for carrying out commercial transactions and apply to the authorities in the event of revealing suspect banknotes.  If it is necessary to use foreign currencies for commercial transactions it is desirable to carry out such transactions through banks or currency exchange offices,” says the statement.

We will recall that Tajik central bank in July denied reports about entry of counterfeit somoni banknotes into circulation as absolutely baseless.  No one case of entry of fake somoni banknotes into circulation has been registered in the country since the beginning of the year, the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) said on July 2, 2013.

A number of preventive measures were reportedly taken as part of implementation of the separate provisions of the working plan and a letter recommending displaying vigilance while conducting money transactions was sent to financial institutions, credit organizations and currency exchange offices.

The NBT stressed in July that the national currency of Tajikistan has quite a high level of protection and attempts by separate persons to counterfeit the somoni banknotes were not successful.
