DUSHANBE, February 1, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan last month topped former republics of the Soviet Union in terms of rise in the exchange rate of the dollar (USD) against the national currency, Belarusian news agency BelPan reports.

The Tajik national currency, the somoni (TJS), reportedly lost 12.19 percent of its value against USD last month.

The five top countries, where the highest rise in the USD exchange rate has been reported over the report period, also include Belarus – 12.04 percent, Kazakhstan – 7.46 percent, Moldova – 4.81 percent, and Ukraine – 4.80 percent.

In Georgia, the national currency fell 3.22 percent against USD in January, in Russia – 3.14 percent, in Azerbaijan – 2.65 percent, in Armenia – 1.03 percent, and in Uzbekistan – 0.77 percent.

The Kyrgyz national currency last month reportedly lost 0.02 percent of its value against USD and the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian national currency lost 0.29 percent  of the their value against USD each.

In Turkmenistan, the national currency exchange rate did not change last month.

In 2015, Tajikistan was listed fifth among the former Soviet republic in terms of rise in the exchange rate of the dollar (USD) against the national currency.

According to data from the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT), an official exchange rate of the somoni against the dollar fell from 7.1101:1 on January 1 to 7.8424 on January 31.          

As it had been reported earlier, the somoni lost 31.6 percent of its value against the dollar in a year to December 31, 2015 – from 5.46:1 on December 31, 2014, to 6.9902:1 on December 31, 2015.
