The level of electricity loss in Tajikistan has decreased slightly over the past year, but a fifth of the electricity produced in the republic is still being lost.

According to the country's electric power companies, the total volume of electricity loss in the first half of the year amounted to 2 billion 203.2 million kilowatt-hours. This is 21.3% of the electricity generated in the republic (10 billion 366.9 million kWh).

Losses in the production and transmission of electricity, which are attributed by power engineers to technical losses, are relatively small – 0.44% (35.3 million kWh) and 3.35% (350.2 million kWh), respectively. In the same period of 2023, these figures were 0.48% and 3.47%.

After the restructuring of the former energy holding, JSC Barki Tojik is engaged in the production of electricity, and its transmission to distribution points is carried out by JSC Transmitting Electric Networks.

Electricity is lost in large volumes during its distribution, which is handled by JSC "Distribution Electric Networks". These losses relate to commercial losses – that is, to theft.

According to this company, over 1 billion 817.7 million kWh or 20.09% of the received electricity was lost in the first half of the year. Compared to the same period in 2023, this is 250.2 million kWh or 2.59 percentage points less.

President Emomali Rahmon, during his address to parliament, said that electricity losses in 2023 amounted to more than 4 billion. kilowatt-hours, which is about 20% of last year's output.

"If we prevent this, there will be enough electricity for everyone," he said.

According to independent energy experts, the level of electricity losses in the country is really very high, despite the holding of various events with multimillion-dollar expenses. Moreover, some experts claim that the true loss rate is actually twice as high and exceeds 40%.
