DUSHANBE, July 17, 2008, Asia-Plus  -- Over the first six months of this year, 3,105 people have been sentenced in Tajikistan for different crimes, Chairman of the Supreme court Nusratullo Abdulloyev announced at a press conference in Dushanbe on July 16.  

According to him, among those convicted 387 are women (six fewer than in the same period of last year) and 206 are minors (162 minors were convicted in January-June 2007).

Dwelling on the juvenile crime, the judge said that crimes committed by minors over the report included 130 cases of theft, 25 cases of hooliganism and nine cases of robbery.  

In the meantime, the head of the military board of the Supreme Court, Sayfullo Giyoyev, noted that over the same six-month period, courts of first instance have considered 383 criminal proceedings instituted against military personnel; sentences have been passed on 313 cases.  “In all, 358 servicemen have been sentenced over report period for different crimes, including, hooliganism, raping, robbery, fraud, drug trafficking, etc,” Giyoyev said.  

According to the Supreme Court, the number of criminal proceedings considered over the report period is 25 percent more than in the same period of last year.  However, compared to January-June 2007 there has been a 15.3 percent reduction in the number of criminal proceedings instituted on killing charges and a 33 percent reduction in the number of criminal proceedings instituted on drug-trafficking charges.

Over the same six-month period, the Supreme Court has considered 35 criminal proceedings instituted 35 criminal proceedings instituted against 53 persons as a court of fist instance.  52 persons have been convicted; of them, 50 persons have been given various jail terms, and two persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
