DUSHANBE, May 26, 2011, Asia-Plus -- A 50-year-old woman from the northern Sughd province has attempted to sell her 10-year-old daughter for 3,000 U.S. dollars, according to the Ministry of Interior (MoI).

The source at a MoI says the woman, who has previous conviction, was detained in Khujand on May 25 when she was selling her underage daughter for 3,000 U.S. dollars.

According to him, the girl has been growing up in hard economic conditions that has forced her mother to sell her to well-grounded people.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.

According to the statistical data from the Interior Ministry, 530 crimes related to trafficking in persons, including seven cases of kidnapping, six cases of human trafficking, ten cases of illegal detention, 14 cases of recruitment of people for exploitation, 16 cases of buying and selling of minors and so forth, were reported in Tajikistan in 2010.
