DUSHANBE, July 28, 2012, Asia-Plus – The current situation in Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) was the focus of a meeting of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon with Western ambassadors that took place in Dushanbe on July 27, the president’s official website reports.

President Rahmon, in particular, noted that the military operation launched by the law enforcement authorities in Khorog targeted members of illegal armed group suspected of murder of Abdullo Nazarov, chief of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS)’s office in Gorno Badakhshan.

The president reportedly told foreign diplomats that all necessary measures were being taken to disarm illegal armed groups and bring them to justice.

The foreign diplomats, for their party, expressed hope the government would guarantee security for civilian populations in the area.

They reportedly also called on Tajik leader to conduct a transparent probe into the events, and guarantee fair trials for any detainees.

Meanwhile, Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service reports the clashes in Khorog have killed some 70 people.
