DUSHANBE, June 17, 2013, Asia-Plus -- Tajik Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Olim Rahimov met Ms. Asiya Sasykbayeva, Deputy Chairperson of Kyrgyz Parliament, Jokorku Kenesh (Supreme Council), in Bishkek at the end of last week.
According to the Tajik Embassy in Bishkek, the sides considered a broad range of issues related to political, economic and humanitarian cooperation between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. They reportedly expressed satisfaction with the current level of bilateral cooperation between their countries.
Delineation of the common border was also among major topics of the meeting. The two, in particular, pointed to the necessity of expansion of border cooperation and acceleration of the process of delimitation and demarcation of the border.
The sides also expressed satisfaction with the level of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and intensification of work of the parliamentary friendship groups of the two countries, the source said.
Rahimov and Sasyskbayeva also exchanged views on a number of regional issues being of mutual interest.
The Jokorku Kenesh (Supreme Council) is the unicameral Parliament of Kyrgyzstan. It has 120 seats with members elected for a five-year term by party-list proportional voting. The Supreme Council is a unicameral legislature Since October 2007. Originally it consisted of 90 members, however when in 2010 President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted after riots, a new Constitution was adopted, that increased the number of members to 120. Parties are limited to 65 seats in order to prevent power concentration.
