DUSHANBE, November 7, 2013, Asia-Plus -- The CIS election observation mission is satisfied with the process of the 2013 presidential election in Tajikistan.

The CIES Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev, who headed the CIS election observation mission in Tajikistan, stated this at a meeting with journalists in Dushanbe on November 7.

“I would like to say on behalf of all CIS nations that participated as observers that the 2013 presidential election was organized much better as compared with the previous presidential election that took place in 2006 and Tajikistan’s legislation provides opportunities for holding free and democratic elections,” CIS Executive Secretary and Head of CIS observers Sergey Lebedev told journalists on Thursday.

According to him, some irregularities and shortcomings revealed in the election process were technical and not massive.  “They had no serious impact on voting and election results,” Lebedev said.

The CIS election observation mission notes that the election results reflect the actual preference of the country’s population and the real social and political situation in Tajikistan.

At the same time, the mission notes that some norms of Tajikistan’s election legislation are not prescribed clearly, for example, observers’ rights and duties and rules of early poll.

Lebedev noted that some irregularities and shortcomings having technical character, such as multiple election attempts, had been revealed during the voting process.  “These cases were isolated and they were removed on the spot,” CIS observation mission head said.

“Many say that there was no political struggle and confrontation.   I will tell you the truth, we are fed up with political confrontations of early 1990s.  We are for stability! And people chooses it and the election has proved this!  “This presidential election has confirmed our movement toward democracy, development and progress,” Lebedev stated.
