DUSHANBE, January 31, Asia-Plus -- Cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations was focus of a meeting of President Emomali Rahmon with the UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan, Mr. Patrick Michael Johns, that was held in Dushanbe on January 31.
After a meeting with President Rahmon, Mr. Jones told journalists that he conveyed to President Rahmon UN Secretary General’s assurance that the United Nations is ready to support development of Tajikistan’s economy, including agrarian sector.
The UN resident Coordinator also noted that they are currently considering the issue of supplying generators to Tajikistan for hospitals and other significant social facilities in case of emergence of the power supply problems. “I have asked all UN agencies active in Tajikistan to study requirements of the regions in electricity,” Mr. Jones said.
According to him, the Unite Nations is currently working with bilateral and multilateral donors on financing of construction of small hydropower plants in order to unload large hydroelectric power stations. “For this, we have tested small and medium units here and plan to increase delivery of them to Tajikistan,” he said.
Mr. Jones also promised that pumps, which do consume fuel and electricity for supplying water from plains to hilly areas for developing them, would be delivered to Tajikistan.
The Resident Coordinator also noted that the UN agencies are cooperating with Tajik emergency authorities on emergency management issues. “I mean possible spring floods, landslides and mudslides,” Mr. Jones said.
