DUSHANBE, June 9, Asia-Plus -- The government discussed the country’s economic results in January-May, further socioeconomic development of Gorno Badakhshan as well as the pace of sowing campaign and preparations for autumn-winter 2008-2009 at a June 9 meeting, presided over by President Emomali Rahmon.
According to presidential press service, the meeting participants included member of the government, heads of ministries and organizations as well senior representatives of president’ office.
During the meeting, it was noted that gross domestic product (GDP) rose 5.1 percent in the year to May 31, 2008, reaching 4.9603 million somonis, and inflation for January-May 2008 stood at 6.7 percent.
Because of severe electricity shortages the country has failed to fulfill its industrial production target for January-May, reaching 95 percent of the target. Moreover, separate industrial sectors have reached only 4% to 36% of their targets for the report period.
In June-October, the index of the volume of production of industrial goods is expected to increase due to increase in the volume of electricity supplies industrial.
In the meantime, compared to the January-May 2008 level, the index of the volume of production of agricultures goods has amounted to 107.3 percent.
Speaking at the meeting, the head of state set specific tasks on increasing economic performance taking preparations for summing up the country’s economic results for the first half-year of 2008.
The president noted ministries and organizations will report in July on the results of work carried out to promote a progress of implementation of the national program for socioeconomic development of Gorno Badakhshan and government’s resolution on improvement of socioeconomic situation in GBAO’s Murgab district as well as implementation of a number of other national programs and investment projects.
Rahmon also pointed to the necessity of speeding up grain-harvesting campaign and timely taking preparations to ensure the regular work of the country''s economy during autumn-winter 2008-2009.
