DUSHANBE, April 8, 2009, Asia-Plus  -- Deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) approved the bill requiring a special license for work with radioactive materials at an April 8 session, presided over by its heads, Saydullo Khairulloyev.

Presenting the bill on amendments to the country’s law “On Licensing of Certain Types of Activity,” MP Ltofat Sharifova noted, “If the bill is endorsed licenses will be needed for work in the sphere of delivering and removing, selling, processing, producing, using and destroying radioactive materials.”

According to her, these proposals made by the government were supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international organizations.  “These amendments are aimed at providing security of the nation, enhancing the environmental protection situation and fulfilling international obligations of the country on non-proliferation of nuclear materials,” Sharifova said.

Parliamentarians approved the bill unanimously.
