DUSHANBE, April 23, 2014, Asia-Plus -- Addressing a joint meeting of both chambers of the parliament in Dushanbe, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon noted on April 23 that construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP) is the fateful project for Tajikistan.

The techno-economic assessment study (TEAS) and the environmental and social impact assessment for the Roghun hydroelectricity project will be completed in the middle of this year and still recovery work is being carried out at the site for construction of the Roghun HPP, the president noted.

According to him, Tajikistan remains adherent to maintaining environmental balance in the region and in the world and adherent to so-called “green economy.”

On the country’s energy sector, Rahmon said noted that power generation in Tajikistan would increase by 320 megawatt this year due to modernization and construction of hydropower facilities.

“Over the past decade, Tajikistan has spent more than 13 billion somoni for enhancement of the energy sector and we plan to allocate 22 billion somoni for enhancement of this sector in the coming seven years,” Rahmon noted.

He further added that eleven domestic and foreign companies were currently exploring natural gas and oil deposits in Tajikistan.
