Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday expressed his condolences to Chinese leader Xi Jinping over a devastating earthquake that struck China’s Gansu and Qinghai provinces Monday night, leaving at least 131 dead and 734 injured.
The Tajik president’s official website says that Tajik leader noted in his message of condolences that the news of the large number of casualties and injuries caused by devastating earthquake deeply saddened him.
“In connection with this heavy grief, I express our sincere condolences to you, the relatives and friends of the victims and wish a full recovery to all those injured,” says the message.
The epicenter of the seismic event, estimated at a magnitude of 6.2, was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. The authorities in Gansu raised their earthquake emergency response to the second-highest level.
Over 1,500 emergency workers are currently taking part in the rescue effort.
