DUSHANBE, August 28, 2012, Asia-Plus -- The Afghan authorities have released Qari Wadud and reestablished him in the previous position of commander of the security forces in the Shuhada district in Afghan Badakhshan Province.
According to Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, the name of Qari Wadud was put on the list of eleven commanders wanted by the security forces in connection with the Khorog events.
We will recall that President Emomali Rahmon reportedly had a telephone conversation with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai on July 25. The sides expressed concern about the situation in southeastern Tajikistan, in particular in the city of Khorog. During 25 July discussions with President Rahmon, Afghan President Karzai reportedly promised to deploy additional troops along border.
Qari Wadud was arrested in early August on suspicion of having been involved in the Khorog events.
That time, provincial security chief for Afghan Badakhshan Samunwal Sakhidad confirmed this information in an interview with Radio Liberty and noted that Qari Wadud was the first person detained in Afghanistan in connection with the Khorog events. Samunwal Sakhidad also confirmed that eight nationals of Afghanistan were killed and four others were detained during a special operation carried out by Tajik government forces in Khorog.
Qari Wadud is reportedly one of commanders of the Islamic Party of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
