DUSHANBE, February 23, 2015, Asia-Plus – An avalanche that occurred on February 22 completely destroyed two residential buildings in the Nivodak neighborhood of Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), the Khorog-based newspaper Impulse reports.
Fortunately no injured was reported, according to the source.
Impulse reports heavy snowfalls on February 21-22 caused a series of avalanches in the region that block in several places the main highways from Dushanbe to Khorog, from Khorog to Ishkashim, and from Khorog to Murgab. Road workers are clearing the highways of snow.
Taking into consideration the risk of further avalanches in the region, local officials in Khorog have reportedly set up a special avalanche commission.
According to Impulse , the GBAO emergency management agency head Doustali Khudoyorov has said that 52 households were evacuated from avalanche prone areas on Saturday. They have reportedly been provided with temporary dwellings and basic food products.
GBAO governor Shodikhon Jamshed has ordered all government bodies to assist households in rehabilitation of the damaged residential buildings, Impulse reports.
