DUSHANBE, March 3, 2015, Asia-Plus -- UNDP and Japan’s Government will help to improve the Tajik-Afghan border management capacity.

An appropriate project was approved here today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, UNDP and Japan’s Government (through the Japan International Cooperation Agency – JICA).

A total cost the budget that is designed for two and a half years is 4.2 million U.S. dollars.  The project stipulates construction of a new border crossing point in Langar (in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region -- GBAO) and rehabilitation of five other border crossing points in the region as well as training for Tajik border guards and customs officers.

3.9 million U.S. dollars have been provided by Japan’s Government and 300,000 U.S. dollars have been provided by UNDP.       

UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan Alexander Zuev noted that it was also planned to rehabilitate border marketplaces in Ruzvai (GBAO’s Darvoz district) and in Ishkashim (GBAO’s Ishkashim district).

Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov noted that efficient control of the Tajik-Afghan border was not only in interest of Tajikistan but also in interest of all CIS nations.
