DUSHANBE, September 22, 2009, Asia-Plus -- Tajikistan will probably overcome the global financial crisis only after the international prices Tajikistan’s major commodities – aluminum and cotton – rise, Tajik known economist, Dr. Hojimahmad Umarov, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.
Besides, improvement of economic indices in Russia and Kazakhstan will also promote gradual improvement of economic situation in Tajikistan. “Tajikistan strongly depends on these countries, because our labor migrants, who are critical component in Tajikistan’s economy, work in these countries,” Dr. Umarov said, noting that labor migrants’ remittances to Tajikistan have decreased by some 35 percent.
“There is another way for Tajikistan to overcome the financial crisis, which is called “an active action,” said the expert, “It is not a secret that to overcome the crisis Tajikistan needs financial resources. To find these resources inside the country it is necessary to declare war on corruption and punish all those persons involved in corruption. It is necessary to give back funds that had been stolen to the government and use them for overcoming the crisis.”
Umarov also pointed to the necessity of rehabilitating enterprises whose products are in demand in the domestic market. “This will also require funds, but rehabilitation of enterprises requires fewer funds than construction of the new ones,” said he. “To rehabilitate these enterprises there are enough funds that are provided by banks and international creditors. The government must conduct monitoring in this sphere.”
