KHUJAND, June 26, 2015, Asia-Plus -- The Tajik northern city of Chkalovsk has been renamed Shohkant.
A decision on renaming the city was made at a session of the Chkalovsk legislature (Majlis) that took place on June 25.
We will recall that a session of the Qayroqqum legislature that also took place on June 25 made a decision to rename Qayroqqum Orienkant.
Founded in 1946, Chkalovsk is a city in northern Tajikistan. Chkalovsk is a city of provincial subordination, administratively subordinated to the provincial capital of Khujand. As of January 1, 2014, the population of Chkalovsk is estimated at 31,900
As a result of its involvement in the processing of uranium ore mined nearby, Chkalovsk was a closed city until the collapse of the USSR.
Khujand Airport, bus assembly plant, Vostokredmet (Eastern Rare Metals) state enterprise, which was set up in the early 1940s to extract and enrich uranium, and affinage shop are located in the city.
The Presidential National Guard of Tajikistan formed one of its new units in the city.
