A significant step towards enhancing healthcare services for mothers and children was taken on January 29 2025, as KfW and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade signed a grant agreement amounting to €10 million for the Mother and Child Health Project, Phase VI, says press release issued by KfW Development Bank.

The project funds were allocated by grant funding of the German Government in the frame of bilateral financial cooperation.

The signing ceremony was attended by key participants, including Minister Zavqi Zavqizoda, German Ambassador Mr. York Schuegraf, and Regional Office Director of KfW Dr. Andreas Schneider as well as Deputy Minister of Health  - Ms. Zulfiya Abdusamadzoda.  This partnership aims to improve access to quality healthcare services for all populations, particularly focusing on pregnant women, mothers, and newborns, including refugees from Afghanistan.

Approximately 20% of the budget will be allocated as additional funding to the ongoing construction of a new hospital building at the Tajik National Research Institute for Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Perinatology in Dushanbe. The remaining funds will be directed towards the establishment of a new Mother and Child Health (MCH) department at the Central District Hospital of Vahdat.

The project, titled "Mother and Child Care and Emergency Medicine Program," is designed to enhance the capabilities of the Vahdat City Hospital in fulfilling its role as a designated Mother and child healthcare hospital. The initiative will ensure that quality health and emergency care are accessible to all, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The project will encompass the construction of an annex building, supplementary supportive facilities, the provision of essential medical equipment, and training for healthcare professionals.  The Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population will serve as the executing agency, supported by international consultants to ensure effective implementation on the ground.

KfW has been active in the health sector in Tajikistan since 2003 and has been implementing programs of the Financial Cooperation of Germany with Tajikistan in the fields of mother and child health/emergency care in the amount up to EUR 65 million over the last 18 years.
