Tajikistan is seeing improvements in both the speed and affordability of its internet.  As of now, the country no longer offers tariffs with speeds lower than 5 Mbps, Isfandiyor Sadullo, Head of the Communications Service under the Government of Tajikistan, said at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 23.  

Sadullo highlighted that the average cost of 1 Mbps internet has decreased to 17.63 somonis, while the average price for 1 GB of mobile internet is now 2.5 somonis (US$0.25).

“This trend will continue, and as of July 15 this year, the minimum internet speed will be 15 Mbps.  By the end of the year, the speed will reach 30 Mbps, and within the next three years, this figure will increase to 100 Mbps,” promised the head of the Communications Service.

He also mentioned that users with internet speeds below 5 Mbps can file complaints with mobile operators to address their issues.

What are operators and users saying?

Asia-Plus reached out to major mobile network providers (Zet-Mobile, Tcell, Babilon-Mobile, and MegaFon Tajikistan), who shared details about recent changes to tariffs and internet prices. According to the mobile companies, they have reduced the cost of some tariffs, while in other cases, they have increased the data limits.

In some instances, these changes were made only for new subscribers, meaning that many existing customers have not seen any adjustments.

This is confirmed by users who continue to voice complaints about slow speeds and high internet prices.  A survey conducted by Asia-Plus on July 23 revealed that over 60% of respondents did not notice any changes in either price or speed.  Only 6% of those surveyed observed a decrease in cost and an improvement in speed.

Tajikistan's global internet speed ranking

In the latest Speedtest Global Index, Tajikistan ranked 117th out of 155 countries for internet speed (fixed broadband).  The average download speed in the country is 36.96 Mbps, which is significantly below the global average of 98.3 Mbps.

According to the Communications Service, the total number of subscribers connected to telecommunications networks in the country is 8.3 million, with 5.6 million being active mobile subscribers.  The total number of mobile and fixed internet users stands at 5.1 million, of which 4.9 million are mobile internet users. This represents an increase of 600,000 users compared to the beginning of 2025.

In Tajikistan, internet services are provided by six mobile operators and 24 fixed-line operators.
