The first two months of summer have posed a major challenge for Tajikistan’s energy system, with frequent power outages disrupting daily life.  Officials say the disruptions are temporary, but multiple factors have combined to place a heavy strain on the country's electrical grid.

Four main causes of the outages

At a news conference held by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, officials outlined four key reasons for the recent surge in power disruptions:

1. Extreme heat -- A sharp rise in temperatures has led to a spike in electricity consumption, largely driven by widespread use of air conditioning.  The increased demand has significantly burdened the power grid.
2. Operation of pumping stations -- Summer is peak season for agricultural irrigation, and pumping stations—major consumers of electricity—have further stressed the system.
3. Scheduled maintenance -- Planned repairs and maintenance on power plants and transmission lines have led to temporary shutdowns in some areas.
4. Substation failures -- Technical malfunctions and emergency incidents at substations have exacerbated the issue, causing additional disruptions in electricity supply.

Officials emphasized that efforts are underway to stabilize the grid and restore reliable power distribution as temperatures continue to soar.
