Azerbaijani media reports say Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation on the unification of their energy systems.

The document was reportedly signed following a meeting of the ministers of economy and energy of the three countries that took place in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, on May 1.

The Azerbaijani Minister of Economy, Mikayil Jabbarov, wrote on social media that the implementation of this document will allow the three parties to cooperate in the production of “green” energy and organize its export through Azerbaijan to Europe, ensuring the integration of energy systems and effective use of renewable energy sources.

“During the trilateral meeting of Economy and Energy Ministers from Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, held as part of our working visit to Uzbekistan, we signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Merging the Energy Systems of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan,” Minister Jabbarov wrote on X.

He noted that the implementation of the memorandum will catalyze the collective goals of the three countries.

“The implementation of this document will catalyze our collective goals, particularly focusing on the production and export of green energy to Europe through Azerbaijan's territory, the integration of energy systems, and the effective utilization of renewable resources,” the Azerbaijani minister stated.

It is to be noted that the parties reached an agreement on unification of their energy systems.  A respective agreement was reached at a meeting of energy and economy ministers of these three countries that took place in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, in November last year.

Russian media reports said at the time that the Baku meeting focused on discussing the prospects of electricity exports from Central Asian countries to Europe through the territory of Azerbaijan.  The meeting participants reportedly signed a joint communique, in which they noted the potential of countries in the area of renewable energy and their readiness to join the project on export of electricity received from alternative sources to Europe.
