DUSHANBE, August 4, 2015, Asia-Plus -- Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov yesterday met here with United States Ambassador to Tajikistan Susan M. Elliott.
According to the Tajik MFA information department the two discussed state and prospects of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States as well as a number of other issues being of mutual interest.
They reportedly also discussed issues related to the situation of security and freedom of religion in Tajikistan.
In the course of the talks, Tajik foreign minister expressed gratitude to the United States for assistance provided to mitigate effects of recent mudslides and floods in Tajikistan.
We will recall that in the second half of July, high temperatures and rapid snow and glacier melting triggered flooding and mudslides, which have destroyed a great deal of infrastructure, commercial property, and households in mountain areas of Tajikistan. Seven persons have been killed by mudslides – six in the Vanj district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and one in the Rasht district (eastern Tajikistan).
Tajik MFA said on July 21 that the damages caused by the mudslides and floods were estimated at 100 million U.S. dollars.
