The two post-war German states became one on October 3, 1990.  The six reestablished federal states of East Germany– Branderburg, Berlin (formed by uniting the two halves of the formerly divided city), Mecklenburg-West Pemirania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia formally joined  the Federal Republic of Germany,  choosing one of two options implemented in the West German constitution (Grundgesetz).  This event, seen with the benefit of hindsight, was as much the starting point as the culmination of the process of unification.
