On December 24, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin met in Tokyo with his Japanese counterpart, Mr. Yoshimasa Hayashi, on the sidelines of the 9th Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the "Central Asia plus Japan" Dialogue.
According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two discussed state and prospects of further expansion of the bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Japan, including cooperation within the framework of the “Central Asia + Japan” Dialogue.
They reportedly also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest.
At the end of the meeting, Muhriddin and Hayashi signed the program of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries designed for 2023-2025.
Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Japan were established on February 2, 1992. The Embassy of Tajikistan opened in Japan on November 28, 2007. The Embassy of Japan opened in Dushanbe on January 26, 2002.
Tajikistan and Japan hold bilateral consultations regularly. The consultations serve as an important mechanism to strengthen and further develop relations between the two countries.
The legal foundation of cooperation between Tajikistan and Japan includes more than 60 government-to-government agreements.
The Central Asia + Japan Dialogue is an important platform for cooperation.
Established in 2006, Office of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tajikistan promotes strengthening of bilateral cooperation and contributes to the development of the social sectors of Tajikistan.
