The Speaker of Kyrgyzstan’s Jogorku Kenesh, Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu, arrived in Dushanbe on September 15 for an official visit.

Upon arrival, the Kyrgyz parliamentary leader laid a wreath at the monument to Ismoil Somoni, paying tribute to the national and cultural values of the Tajik people, the press service of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) reported.

Majlisi Milli Speaker Rustam Emomali, who is also the Mayor of Dushanbe, has reportedly held talks with Turgunbek uulu.

The discussions were reportedly attended by official delegations from both countries. Before the meeting, the Kyrgyz speaker signed the Book of Honorary Guests of the Tajik Parliament.

Emomali welcomed his Kyrgyz counterpart and delegation, expressing appreciation for the visit.  The two sides discussed a wide range of issues related to Tajik–Kyrgyz relations, with a focus on areas of mutual interest and cooperation, according to the Majlisi Milli press center.

The Jogorku Kenesh (the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan) is the unicameral parliament of Kyrgyzstan.  Before Kyrgyzstan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, it was known as the Supreme Soviet of the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic.

The parliament has 90 seats, with members elected for a five-year term by two methods: party-list proportional voting (54 seats) and first-past-the-post voting (36 seats).
